Uganda Cranes Icon Emmanuel Okwi Retires from Professional Football

Emmanuel Arnold Okwi, the revered former captain of the Uganda Cranes, has officially announced his retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a career marked by consistent performance and leadership. The decision, made public on August 3, 2026, follows his earlier retirement from international football in March 2025.

In an emotional farewell message, Okwi reflected on his journey, stating, "After many unforgettable years on the pitch, the time has come for me to say goodbye to professional football." He described the choice as one of the most challenging decisions of his life, underscoring that football was not merely a profession but his passion, purpose, and a dream he was fortunate to live every day. Okwi extended his gratitude to every club, coach, teammate, opponent, and fan who supported him throughout his extensive career. He also indicated his intention to remain involved in the sport, aiming to contribute to its growth and inspire the next generation of talent.

Okwi's final professional club was Rwanda Premier League side Police FC, where he signed for the 2025/26 season in August 2025. This move came after the expiration of his one-year contract with AS Kigali. In the season immediately preceding his transfer to Police FC, Okwi demonstrated his enduring goalscoring prowess, finishing as AS Kigali's top scorer with nine league goals and earning a nomination for the league's Best Player of the Season award. His performance highlighted his continued potency at the club level, even as his career neared its conclusion.

His retirement from international football in March 2025 was a strategic move to create opportunities for younger players, particularly with East Africa slated to host the CHAN tournament in August 2025 and the AFCONCompetition·AFCON 2027. At that time, Okwi articulated the profound significance of representing his nation.

"Representing my country on the international stage has been a fulfilling dream that came true. Donning the Uganda Cranes shirt always left a special feeling, and captaining our team was an absolute privilege and honour."

He further elaborated on his decision to step aside from the international arena.

"Having cherished all those memories, I believe it is time for me to bow out and pave the way for our talented young football players"— Emmanuel Arnold Okwi.
